A Kigali food processor, ready to export under the AfCFTA

A growing Kigali processor wanted to sell beyond Rwanda but could not tell which products qualified for preferential tariffs. We checked its range against the rules of origin, chose two markets and found the distributors.

Where it started

The challenge

The company had outgrown its home market and wanted to export across the region. Some of its packaging and ingredients came from outside the continent, so nobody could say with confidence which of its products would qualify for AfCFTA tariffs.

It also had no buyers, distributors or contacts in the markets it was considering.

What we did

Our approach

  • Check every productWe traced the inputs for each product line against the applicable rules of origin, and showed which lines would qualify with a change of supplier.
  • Choose the marketsWe compared demand, landed cost, tariffs and logistics across five markets, and recommended two the company could serve profitably from Kigali.
  • Find the buyersWe shortlisted distributors in each market, ran background checks and supported the negotiations through to signed agreements.

Where it ended

The outcome

Eleven products were cleared for preferential tariffs, three of them after a change of packaging supplier. The company signed distribution agreements in two markets and made its first shipment within five months.

  • 11products cleared under rules of origin
  • 2new export markets
  • 5 monthsfrom first meeting to first shipment

We had read about the AfCFTA for years. Constelor showed us how to ship under it within a quarter.
